Kolleru Lake, located near Eluru in Andhra Pradesh, is one of the largest freshwater lakes in India and Asia’s largest shallow freshwater lake. Situated between the Krishna and Godavari river deltas, it spans an area that varies seasonally, reaching up to around 245 square kilometers during the monsoon.
The lake acts as a natural flood-balancing reservoir for the two rivers and supports a rich biodiversity including over 200 bird species, both resident and migratory, such as spot-billed pelicans, Siberian cranes, and painted storks. Recognized as a wildlife sanctuary since 1999 and a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 2002, the lake also supports diverse aquatic flora and fauna.
However, illegal fish tanks and pollution have impacted the lake's ecosystem and water quality, affecting local livelihoods and causing ecological imbalances. Conservation efforts by the state government continue to focus on restoring the lake’s natural health while supporting sustainable usage by local communities.
