Koraput

Koraput is a district in southern Odisha, India, located along the Eastern Ghats mountain range. It covers an area of about 8,807 square kilometers, making it the third largest district in the state by area. Koraput is known as the heartland of Odisha's tribal communities, with over half of its population belonging to various indigenous groups such as Paraja, Gadaba, and Kandha.

The district is rich in natural resources and biodiversity, featuring Odisha’s highest peak, Deomali, and notable natural attractions like the Duduma waterfalls. Historically, Koraput was part of ancient kingdoms and later ruled by the Suryavanshi dynasty based in Jeypore. The area was incorporated into Odisha state in 1936 and has experienced administrative changes over time.

The district is also known for its tribal culture, traditional crafts like Kotpad fabrics, and unique temples including the Jagannath Temple known as Sabara Srikhetra. Agriculture plays a significant role in the local economy, complemented by industries such as aluminum mining and aircraft manufacturing. Koraput’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and tribal traditions make it an important region for tourism and cultural preservation in Odisha.
