Kottiyoor is a village and wildlife sanctuary located in the hilly eastern part of Kannur district in Kerala, surrounded by dense forests and bordering Karnataka. It is home to two ancient Shiva temples on opposite banks of the Bavali River, with the permanent Ikkare Kottiyoor temple open year-round except during the 27-day Vysakha festival when the temporary Akkare Kottiyoor shrine across the river is used.
The temples and area hold deep religious significance tied to the legend of Daksha Yaga and Sati Devi's self-immolation, symbolizing the meeting of major Hindu deities. Kottiyoor Sanctuary, established in 2011, covers over 3,000 hectares and forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, hosting rich tropical forests and diverse wildlife.
