Kumbhalgarh Fort, located in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan about 84 kilometers from Udaipur, was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, a ruler of the Mewar kingdom. Known for its massive walls stretching approximately 36 kilometers, it is considered the second longest fort wall in the world after the Great Wall of China.
The fort sits atop the Aravalli hills, surrounded by 13 mountain peaks and dense forests, making it extremely difficult to conquer. It served as a strategic defense and refuge for Mewar rulers, especially when their capital, Chittorgarh, was under siege.
The fort complex includes seven fortified gateways, strong bastions designed to prevent enemy scaling, and several palaces such as Kumbha Mahal, Badal Mahal, and the birthplace of the famed warrior Maharana Pratap. Ingenious water systems with dams and step-wells ensured the fort could endure long sieges despite lacking natural water sources.
Kumbhalgarh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a symbol of Rajput valor, architectural brilliance, and historical significance.
