The Lake Palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan, originally called Jagniwas, was constructed between 1743 and 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II as a royal summer retreat on a natural island in Lake Pichola. Built mainly of white marble adorned with semi-precious stones, the palace features elegant courtyards, pillared terraces, fountains, and gardens, reflecting a blend of Rajasthani architecture with some Mughal influences.
Positioned facing east to honor the Hindu sun god Surya, it was designed to provide the royal family privacy away from the city palace, hosting durbars and moonlit gatherings. Over time, the Lake Palace transformed from a royal residence into a luxury hotel in the 1960s, eventually becoming part of the Taj Hotels group in 1971. It is renowned worldwide for its picturesque setting on the lake, exquisite architectural detail, and historical significance, including its prominent role as a filming location in the 1983 James Bond film "Octopussy."
The palace spans about four acres, contains around 83 rooms and suites, and retains its regal charm while offering modern luxury. It is accessible only by boat from the Udaipur City Palace area, adding to its allure as a floating jewel in the lake.
