Lalbagh, Bengaluru

Lalbagh Botanical Garden in Bengaluru is a sprawling 240-acre garden with a history spanning over 200 years. Originally commissioned by Hyder Ali in 1760 and later expanded by his son Tipu Sultan, it was designed to showcase a wide variety of plants, including many rare and exotic species from France, Persia, and Afghanistan.

The garden is renowned for its iconic glass house, inspired by London’s Crystal Palace, which hosts biannual flower shows on Republic Day and Independence Day. Lalbagh also features Lalbagh Rock, one of the oldest rock formations on Earth, estimated to be around 3,000 million years old, crowned by the Kempegowda watchtower that marks the historic city boundaries.

The garden includes attractions such as a large lake with walking trails and a mini waterfall, a rose garden, bonsai collection, and several historic monuments. With centuries-old trees, diverse flora, and scenic spots, Lalbagh is a beloved urban green space reflecting Bengaluru’s botanical heritage and providing a tranquil retreat amidst the city bustle. It also supports local wildlife and is a hub for horticultural education and conservation.
