Lum Sohpetbneng, also known as the Navel of Heaven, is a sacred peak located in the Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya, near Shillong. According to Khasi folklore, this peak was once connected to heaven by a golden vine bridge, symbolizing the umbilical cord between earth and the divine.
The Khasis believe that this bridge was severed due to human pride and sin.
The peak stands at an elevation of 1,424 meters (4,674 feet) and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills, Umiam Lake, and the city of Shillong. It is a popular pilgrimage site for the Khasi people, especially during the annual festival held on the second Sunday of February.
