The MARC Aquarium, located in Digha, Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal, is one of the largest inbuilt public marine aquariums in India. Established in 1989, it consists of three main wings: a research center, an aquarium, and a marine museum. The aquarium opened to the public in 2003 and features both marine and freshwater sections with numerous tanks housing a variety of species such as sea anemones, lobsters, sharks, rays, various fishes, sea snakes, and more.
The marine museum, opened in 2016, displays over 500 marine species including fish, corals, mollusks, and life-size models of sea turtles, serving as an educational platform for marine biodiversity and conservation awareness. The center conducts research and offers training programs, helping researchers and students while attracting around 400,000 visitors annually.
The aquarium is open from 10 AM to 6 PM, closed on Tuesdays, and plays a significant role in marine biological research and public education in the region.
