Madras Crocodile Bank Trust
The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology, located about 40 kilometers south of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, was established in 1976 by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker and his wife Zai Whitaker. Initially created to conserve and breed Indian crocodile species, especially the mugger, saltwater crocodile, and critically endangered gharial, it has grown into one of the largest reptile zoos in the world.
The facility covers 8.5 acres of coastal sand forest near the Bay of Bengal and houses 15 species of crocodilians along with many other reptiles such as turtles, snakes, and lizards. The trust also conducts research, conservation, and educational projects, including field stations in the Andaman Islands, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh for habitat preservation and snake venom extraction.
It has become a vital center for reptile conservation, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually while promoting scientific research and environmental awareness.
