Maduranthakam Lake
Maduranthakam Lake, also known as Maduranthakam Aeri, is an artificial lake covering about 2,400 acres in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. It is the largest lake in the district and the second largest in the state.
Built during the reign of Chola King Uttama Chola, the lake has a storage capacity of over 16 million cubic meters and is one of the oldest impounded lakes in India, dating back to 1798. It plays a crucial role in irrigation, supporting agriculture and providing water to over a thousand nearby villages.
The lake is also home to the historic Eri-Katha Ramar Temple, revered for its association with protecting the lake from flooding. Positioned in a region that receives rainfall mostly during the northeast monsoon, the lake supports rich biodiversity and winter migratory birds.
However, the lake faces challenges like siltation, water management issues, and encroachment, leading to ongoing efforts to rejuvenate and restore it to safeguard its ecological and economic importance.
