Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, also known as Chhatbir Zoo, is located near Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali), Punjab, about 20 kilometers from Chandigarh. Established in 1977 and named after the then governor of Punjab, the zoo is the largest in Punjab, spreading over 505 acres and housing more than 1,200 animals from over 100 species including mammals, birds, and reptiles.
It features India’s longest walk-in aviary, thematic zones representing different ecosystems, and successful captive breeding programs for endangered species like the gharial crocodile. The zoo also serves as a rescue and rehabilitation center and is known for its conservation efforts, educational programs, and eco-friendly practices.
