It is one of the leading botanical gardens in India, especially known for its extensive collection of aquatic plant species. The garden spans 45 acres and is dedicated to the conservation and research of aquatic plant diversity, lower group plants, and endangered plants of the erstwhile Malabar Region.
MBGIPS is recognized as a research center under the University of Calicut and the Regional Centre of Expertise in Sustainable Education of the United Nations University, Japan. The garden is also a member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International and has international agenda registration.
