Mandore Fort

Mandore Fort, located near Jodhpur in Rajasthan, is an ancient fortification that served as the capital of the Marwar region before the founding of Jodhpur city in the 15th century. Originally established in the 6th century by the Gurjar Pratiharas, the fort was later controlled by the Rathore clan after it was given as dowry to Rao Chunda, who made it the seat of his power. The fort witnessed significant historical events, including battles involving the Mughals and neighboring kingdoms.

Over time, as the capital shifted to Jodhpur with the construction of Mehrangarh Fort, Mandore Fort fell into ruin. Its remains showcase impressive architecture with thick walls and a large temple known for finely carved botanical and celestial designs. Surrounding the fort, Mandore Gardens feature a collection of royal cenotaphs or chhatris—elegant memorials with intricately carved red sandstone structures unique for their pyramid-shaped spires inspired by Hindu temple architecture.

The gardens also contain memorials like the Hall of Heroes, statues of local folk legends, a museum with artifacts from the region's rich history, and the Ravana Temple, which reflects Mandore’s mythological connection. Today, Mandore Fort and its gardens serve as a cultural and historical site, revealing the rich legacy of the Marwar rulers and attracting visitors to explore its royal past and architectural beauty.
