Manek Burj
Manek Burj is the oldest bastion and the foundation stone of the walled city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, established by Sultan Ahmed Shah I on February 26, 1411. Named after the 15th-century Hindu saint Maneknath, who, according to legend, aided or challenged Ahmed Shah during the construction of Bhadra Fort, it stands about 16 meters (53 feet) high and once included a large roofed stepwell known as Manek Kuva.
The stepwell was filled in 1866 after the Sabarmati River changed its course, affecting its water supply. The bastion lies near the east end of Ellis Bridge (now Swami Vivekanand Bridge), which was first built in 1869 and later expanded in 1999, leading to partial demolition and restoration of the bastion. Manek Burj symbolizes the city's rich heritage and blends historical and spiritual significance, with descendants of Maneknath still performing rituals here on Ahmedabad's foundation day and Vijayadashami festival annually.
It remains a key historical landmark offering views of both old and new Ahmedabad.
