Mani Majra, now known as Sector 13 of Chandigarh, is a historic town originally founded in 1515 by Mani Ram Dhillon as the capital of the Manimajra State. It was a princely state during the Sikh period ruled by the Dhillon clan, with a fort built by Gharib Dass Dhillon that served as the state's capital.
The state comprised many villages and saw conflicts with neighboring states like Patiala and Nahan. Over time, the territory was expanded and included important places such as Pinjore. The last ruler was Raja Bhagwan Singh, and after his death without an heir, the state was annexed by the British in 1875.
Mani Majra retained historical and religious significance, including old temples and gurdwaras. Today, Mani Majra is an urban locality within Chandigarh, known for residential complexes, green areas, and commercial developments, and it underwent an official renaming to Sector 13 in 2020 as part of the city's planned sectors.
