Markandeya Tank
The Markandeya Tank, also known as Markandeswar Tank, is one of the Panchatirthas (five sacred bathing places) of Puri, Odisha. It is located to the north of the Jagannath Temple and is considered the starting point of pilgrimage for visitors to Puri. The tank is an open structure enclosed within a stone wall made of dressed laterite blocks.
The tank is associated with the legend of Sage Markandeya, who meditated on Lord Shiva at this spot.
The nearby Markandeshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have been built by the sage out of gratitude for being saved by the deity. The tank is used for both ritualistic purposes and normal bathing, with bathing ghats provided for tourists on the southern side.
