Mayurjharna Elephant Reserve, located in Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, is an important conservation area dedicated to the protection of elephants and their habitat. Established in 2002, the reserve spans an area of approximately 414.06 square kilometers and extends into parts of Jhargram and Bankura districts. It was created under the Central Scheme Project Elephant to safeguard the region’s elephant population and mitigate human-elephant conflicts.
The reserve consists of several forest blocks, including Kankrajhore, Mayurjharna, Banspahari, and Bhulabheda, which provide a natural habitat for elephants and other wildlife. Over the years, the elephant population in the reserve has grown significantly, reflecting the success of conservation efforts.
The surrounding zone of influence covers an additional 1,436 square kilometers, ensuring a broader ecological balance.
