Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary
Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary in Lower Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, was established in 1980 to protect the rich biodiversity around Mehao Lake, a natural lake believed to have formed after the 1950 earthquake. The sanctuary covers about 281.5 square kilometers of lush tropical and subtropical forests and hills, offering a habitat for around 60 mammal species, including the Bengal tiger, clouded leopard, red panda, hoolock gibbon, and snow leopard during winters.
It also hosts over 300 bird species, snakes, butterflies, and fish, making it a significant biodiversity hotspot. The sanctuary is known for its scenic landscapes with rivers, mountains, and lakes, and it provides trekking opportunities through dense forest areas while giving a chance to experience local indigenous cultures.
Visitors usually stay in the nearby town of Roing, and the best time to visit is between October and March when the climate is most pleasant for wildlife observation and trekking.
