Tourist Attraction
Mohini Shikhara
Mohini Shikhara is one of the two unique rock formations in the village of Yana, located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. The other rock formation is known as Bhairaveshwara Shikhara. These massive rock outcrops are composed of solid black, crystalline Karst limestone and stand tall amidst the lush green forests of the Western Ghats.
The name "Mohini Shikhara" is derived from the Hindu mythology of Mohini, the female avatar of Lord Vishnu. According to legend, the demon king Bhasmasura was given a boon by Lord Shiva that he could turn anyone to ashes by placing his hand on their head. To protect the world, Lord Vishnu transformed into Mohini and tricked Bhasmasura into placing his hand on his own head, leading to his demise. The rocks are said to have turned black from the ashes of the demon.
