Mudumalai National Park

Mudumalai National Park, located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, covers about 321 square kilometers at an elevation between 850 and 1,250 meters. Established in 1940 and part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve since 1986, it functions as a crucial wildlife corridor connecting the Eastern and Western Ghats.

The park is home to diverse ecosystems including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, supporting over 500 plant species, 266 bird species, and a variety of mammals such as Indian elephants, Bengal tigers, gaurs, Indian leopards, and endangered species like the Indian giant squirrel.

The Moyar River and its tributaries flow through the park, sustaining rich aquatic life. Mudumalai experiences an annual rainfall of around 1,420 mm, mainly during the southwest monsoon, with a climate ranging from cool winters to hot summers. The park faces challenges such as habitat fragmentation from roads and occasional wildfires but remains a vital sanctuary for conservation and eco-tourism, offering visitors opportunities to experience rich flora and fauna in their natural habitat.
