Mundakayam is a town in Kanjirappally taluka of Kottayam district, Kerala, known as the gateway to the high ranges of southern Kerala. It is situated at the border of Kottayam and Idukki districts, with the Manimala River flowing through it. The town is surrounded by lush greenery and extensive rubber plantations. Mundakayam lies about 48 kilometers east of Kottayam city and 148 kilometers from the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram.
It has a population of nearly 20,000 people living in around 5,000 households, with a literacy rate of over 86%. The economy mainly revolves around agriculture, particularly coffee, pepper, cocoa, and rubber cultivation. The name Mundakayam is believed to be derived from the Mundi cranes that were once common along the riverbanks in the area.
