The idol stands at an impressive 20 feet tall and 11 feet wide, carved from a single massive rock.
The temple was originally a sub-temple of the Puliakulam Mariamman temple and was opened in its present form in 1992. The Ganesh Chathurthi festival is celebrated here every year with great grandeur since 1982.
