Nallagandla Lake

Nallagandla Lake is a natural rain-fed lake located in the northwestern fringe of Hyderabad, Telangana. Spanning approximately 90 acres, the lake features a permanent marsh on its southwestern edge, providing an ideal habitat for various bird species.

It shares its eastern boundary with Hyderabad Central University, while residential developments surround the remaining sides. Despite its ecological significance, the lake faces threats from ongoing construction activities in the area. The Sri Sri Sri Nalla Pochamma Temple stands on the western ghat of the lake, dedicated to Goddess Pochamma, a revered village deity.

The lake plays a central role in local festivities, including Diwali, Chhath Puja, Bathukamma, and Ganesh Chaturthi, where large congregations gather for celebrations. To protect the lake from pollution during these events, a human-made pond has been created for idol immersion, accompanied by a watchtower and a permanent security post.

Nallagandla Lake is also recognized as a birding hotspot, attracting both resident and migratory birds. Among the commonly sighted species are great cormorants, little egrets, Eurasian coots, and grey-headed swamphens.
