Nangal Wildlife Sanctuary
Nangal Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Rupnagar district of Punjab, is a protected wetland area spanning about 116 hectares around the Nangal Dam reservoir on the Sutlej River. Established as a sanctuary in 2009 and designated a Ramsar site in 2019 for its international wetland significance, it supports rich biodiversity including over 150 bird species and several threatened animals such as the Indian pangolin, Egyptian vulture, and leopards.
The sanctuary plays a key role as a critical habitat and stopover for migratory waterbirds and serves as an important biodiversity hotspot in the Shiwalik foothills. Besides its ecological importance, it holds historical importance as the site where Indian and Chinese Prime Ministers formalized the Panchsheel Agreement in 1954.
The area is frequented by nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers, especially during the winter migration season.
