Nilnag Lake

Nilnag Lake is a beautiful freshwater lake located about 35 kilometers from Budgam town in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,390 meters, the lake is nestled amid dense pine and deodar forests near the popular hill station Yousmarg, which is about 5 kilometers away.

Known for its clear turquoise blue water, the name "Nilnag" itself means "blue water lake." The lake is a favorite spot for picnics, trekking, nature lovers, and photographers due to its serene surroundings and scenic views of snow-capped mountains. Access is mainly from Srinagar, the summer capital, by road with a drive of about 2–3 hours followed by a moderate trek or pony ride through forest trails.

The area around the lake also offers opportunities for boating, bird watching, and camping, making it a peaceful retreat rich in natural beauty and biodiversity. The lake holds historical significance as well; it was the favored spot of Eric Biscoe, a missionary, whose ashes were scattered there respecting his wishes. Nilnag Lake is best visited during the pleasant summer and autumn months.
