Nivati Fort is a small sea fort located about 10 kilometers south of Malvan in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. Built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj around 1664, immediately after the construction of Sindhudurg Fort, its primary purpose was to safeguard the important sea route from Karli Creek near Malvan to the Vengurla port.
The fort is situated on a hill near Nivati village and spans about 4 to 5 acres, surrounded by dense bushes. Throughout its history, the fort changed hands several times, being controlled by the Marathas, the rulers of Sawantwadi, and briefly by forces under the Portuguese before finally coming under British control in 1818.
The structure remains in good condition with well-preserved gates, bastions, and a wide moat about 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and nearby landmarks such as the Nivati Rock lighthouse from the fort. The fort is accessible by road, with nearby towns like Malvan and Kudal providing transport links. It offers a peaceful historical site combined with scenic coastal beauty, making it a notable destination on Maharashtra's Konkan coast.
