North Brother Island Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1987, is a small 0.75 square kilometer protected area located in the Duncan Passage in the South Andaman district of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The island is nearly round, about 1.1 km across, mostly flat, thickly wooded except for a central depressed area that forms a seasonal lake during the rainy season. It is fringed by a narrow beach and surrounded by coral reefs, providing important habitat for marine and terrestrial wildlife. Historically, the island was visited by the Onge tribe from Little Andaman for sea turtle hunting in the late 19th century.
The island also features a lighthouse commissioned in 1993 to aid maritime navigation. The sanctuary protects the island’s unique ecosystem and biodiversity within the Indian Ocean region.
