Our Lady of Light Shrine (Luz Church)
The Our Lady of Light Shrine, commonly known as Luz Church, is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was built in 1516 by Portuguese missionaries and is dedicated to Our Lady of Light (Nossa Senhora da Luz in Portuguese). The church is located in the Mylapore area, near the Santhome Basilica, where St. Thomas is believed to be buried.
The church was constructed to commemorate the safe arrival of Portuguese missionaries who were guided by a mysterious light during a storm.
The architecture of Luz Church features Gothic arches and Baroque ornamentation, making it a beautiful example of 16th-century European architecture. The feast of Our Lady of Light is celebrated on August 15th every year.
