The Padmanabhapuram Palace, also known as Kalkulam Palace, is a magnificent example of traditional Kerala architecture located in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Despite being situated in Tamil Nadu, the palace is owned, controlled, and maintained by the Kerala Government. The palace complex lies within an old granite fortress and is situated at the foothills of the Veli Hills, part of the Western Ghats.
Built around 1601 CE by Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal, the palace served as the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Travancore until the capital was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram in 1795. The palace is renowned for its intricate woodwork, including rosewood and teak carvings, and its beautiful murals and paintings.
The Manthrasala, or King's Council Chamber, is particularly notable for its colored mica windows and unique floor made from a combination of egg white, lime, coconut, charcoal, river sand, and jaggery.
