Palak Dïl
Palak Dil, also known as Pala Tipo meaning "swallowing lake" in the Mara language, is the largest lake in Mizoram, situated near Phura village in Saiha district. The lake is oval-shaped, about 870 meters long, 700 meters wide, and 17 to 25 meters deep.
It forms a major part of the Palak Wildlife Sanctuary, located in a biodiversity-rich Indo-Burma hotspot. The sanctuary around the lake supports diverse flora and fauna, including unique and migratory bird species, various fish, prawns, snails, turtles, and tortoises.
The lake is fed by mountain streams and drains through the small Pala Lui river, which supports local agriculture in the valley below. Legends describe the lake as being haunted and surrounded by several myths. Declared a protected area and a Ramsar site, Palak Dil is a significant ecological and cultural landmark offering scenic beauty and wildlife observation opportunities, particularly for bird watchers.
