Palpur-Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary
Palpur-Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, is now known as Kuno National Park, covering around 749 square kilometers. It lies in the Vindhya Hills area and is named after the Kuno River flowing through it. The sanctuary comprises diverse habitats including dry deciduous forests, grasslands, and rocky hills.
It harbors a rich variety of wildlife such as leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, chital, hyenas, Indian wolves, and Indian pythons. Kuno is significant for its role in conservation efforts, especially as a site selected for reintroducing Asiatic lions to establish a second population outside Gir and for the recent introduction of cheetahs under India’s Project Cheetah.
The sanctuary links with other protected areas in the region, enabling wildlife movement and genetic exchange, playing an essential role in Central India's landscape conservation.
