Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary
Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary in South Sikkim covers about 124 square kilometers and lies in the Pakyong District near the borders of Bhutan and Tibet. Established in 2002, it forms part of a crucial wildlife corridor connected to Bhutan's forests and West Bengal's Neora Valley National Park. The sanctuary spans an elevation range of 1,760 to 4,390 meters, encompassing diverse habitats from subtropical forests to alpine meadows.
It supports rich biodiversity as it lies at the junction of the Palearctic and Indomalayan biogeographic realms, hosting rare and endangered species such as red pandas, snow leopards, Himalayan musk deer, Himalayan black bears, and various pheasants. The region also includes high-altitude lakes like Tsongmo, which attract many migratory birds. The forest types range from rhododendron and silver fir to juniper and moss-filled oak, providing an ideal environment for wildlife.
Due to its natural beauty and wildlife, it is a popular destination for trekking, birdwatching, and nature tourism, though access requires permits because it is in a restricted border area. Rivers originating in the sanctuary contribute to the Rangpo and Jaldhaka rivers, adding to its ecological importance.
