The Parinirvana Stupa, also known as the Mahanirvana Stupa, is a significant Buddhist shrine located in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. This sacred site is believed to be the place where Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, attained Parinirvana or passed away.
The present temple was built by the Indian Government in 1956 to commemorate the 2,500th year of Buddha's Mahaparinirvana.
Inside the temple, there is a 6.1-meter-long reclining statue of Buddha, which depicts him lying on his right side with his head to the north. The statue rests on a stone couch and is enshrined within the Mahaparinirvana Temple. The stupa itself is 2.74 meters high and is crowned with a dome that stands 15.81 meters tall.
