Pavagada
Pavagada is a town and taluk situated in the Tumakuru (Tumkur) district of Karnataka, India, located about 158 km from the state capital Bengaluru. Although geographically connected to Chitradurga district, it is administratively part of Tumkur district and lies near the border with Andhra Pradesh, leading to a bilingual population speaking Kannada and Telugu.
The area is known for Pavagada Fort, built around 1405 during the Vijayanagara Empire, which played a strategic role through various historic periods including the Nayakas, Deccan Sultanates, Marathas, and the British. The terrain around Pavagada is characterized by undulating hills and rocky landscapes, with an average elevation of about 646 meters.
It lies in a drought-prone, semi-arid zone with an average annual rainfall of around 589 mm, and its climate is generally hot and dry. The taluk is part of the North Pennar river basin, though it lacks perennial rivers, with the presence of seasonal springs. Agriculture, once focused on crops like peanuts, has declined due to drought, with many residents moving to other cities for livelihood. Pavagada also hosts one of Asia's largest solar parks near Thirumani village, adding to its modern significance.
The town is gradually improving connectivity through road and ongoing rail projects linking it with Bengaluru and other regions.
