Phodong Monastery
Phodong Monastery, located about 28 to 38 kilometers from Gangtok in East Sikkim, is a prominent Buddhist monastery belonging to the Karma Kagyu sect. Founded in the early 18th century by King Gyurmed Namgyal, it replaced an older monastery and was later rebuilt in 1977 after earthquake damage, with support from the government and local monks.
The monastery is home to around 260 monks and features exquisite Tibetan Buddhist architecture, including intricately carved wooden and stone walls, frescoes, murals, and statues of deities. It is renowned for its serene atmosphere, beautiful prayer halls, and religious festivals such as the Cham dance performed annually.
The monastery also gained international attention through the writings of French explorer Alexandra David-Neel, who studied Buddhism there in the early 20th century. Set amidst stunning Himalayan landscapes, Phodong Monastery remains a vital spiritual, cultural, and historical landmark in Sikkim.
