The fort was originally named Illahabas, meaning "blessed by Allah," which later evolved into Allahabad. The fort is known for its massive walls, three grand gateways, and high towers, reflecting the architectural brilliance of the Mughal era.
Inside the fort, visitors can find the Ashoka Pillar, dating back to the 3rd century BCE, which was moved from Kosambi to its current location. Other notable features include the underground Patalpuri Temple, the Akshaya Vat (immortal banyan tree), and the Saraswati Koop, believed to be the source of the mythical Saraswati River.
