Puttenahalli Lake (JP Nagar)

Puttenahalli Lake in JP Nagar, Bengaluru, is a small freshwater lake covering about 13 acres, which has been successfully restored through the dedicated efforts of local residents. Once a pristine lake serving as an important water source for nearby agrarian communities, it suffered severe pollution and neglect over the years as Bengaluru expanded.

In response, a citizen group called the Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust (PNLIT) formed around 2008-2009 and partnered with the local municipal corporation (BBMP) to rejuvenate the lake. Their work involved cleaning, desilting, fencing, planting native trees, creating bird perching islands, and diverting treated sewage water into the lake.

The lake is now a vibrant ecosystem and popular community space with rich biodiversity, especially attracting birdwatchers, and it stands as a shining example of successful urban lake revival driven by community participation. The lake continues to be maintained largely by resident donations and volunteer efforts, making it a significant symbol of environmental conservation and community spirit in Bengaluru.
