Rachol Fort
Rachol Fort in South Goa, Goa, is a historic fortress originally built by the Bahmani Sultanate in the mid-15th century and later controlled by the Vijayanagara kings. In 1520, it was handed over to the Portuguese in exchange for military support against the Sultanate of Bijapur. The Portuguese fortified the fort with over 100 cannons, making it a crucial defensive stronghold on the banks of the Zuari River to protect their colony.
They built a chapel in 1521 and a church in 1565 within its walls. The fort played a key role in resisting attacks such as the 1684 siege by Maratha ruler Sambhaji, which it successfully withstood. Over time, with the expansion of Portuguese territory, the fort lost its military significance and fell into ruin. Today, only parts of the grand gateway now part of the Rachol Seminary—and sections of the walls and moat remain, showcasing its strategic importance rather than architectural grandeur.
The site is valued for its layered history, scenic riverbank location, and as a symbol of Goa's colonial and pre-colonial heritage. The ruins attract visitors interested in history and the legacy of conflict and alliance in the region.
