Raja Mahal

Raja Mahal in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, is often confused with the more prominent Rani Mahal, which holds far greater historical and architectural significance.

The Rani Mahal, also known as the Queen’s Palace, was built in the 18th century by Raghu Nath II of the Newalkar dynasty and later became the residence of Rani Lakshmibai from 1853 to 1857. This two-storey, flat-roofed palace is constructed around a quadrangular courtyard and features six grand halls, intricate arches, and a beautifully adorned Darbar Hall with vibrant frescoes and floral motifs.

It served as a key site during the Revolt of 1857, where Rani Lakshmibai made her legendary stand against British forces. While there is a lesser-known structure called Raja Raghunath Rav Mahal in Jhansi, it is not widely recognized or documented as a major tourist attraction.

Most historical narratives and tourism references in Jhansi focus on the Rani Mahal due to its association with the iconic queen and its transformation into a museum housing sculptures and artifacts from the Gupta to medieval periods.
