Rangayyanadurga Wildlife Sanctuary

Rangayyanadurga Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, India, was established in 2011 mainly to protect the vulnerable Four-horned antelope, a species endemic to India. Covering about 77 square kilometers in the Davanagere district's Jagalur taluk, the sanctuary features dry deciduous forests and scrub landscapes that provide a suitable habitat for this rare antelope and other wildlife.

Besides the four-horned antelope, the sanctuary is home to mammals like sloth bears, foxes, wild boars, sambars, deer varieties, and reptiles such as king cobras and vipers. It also supports diverse bird species, including the vulnerable white-naped tit. To safeguard the ecosystem, an eco-sensitive zone around the sanctuary was declared in 2017, restricting harmful commercial activities in a larger area of over 137 square kilometers.

The sanctuary’s varied terrain with rocky hills and vegetation makes it ideal for trekking, birdwatching, and wildlife photography, attracting nature and adventure enthusiasts, especially from October to March when wildlife sightings are more frequent. Facilities are limited, so visitors are advised to carry essentials and proper gear for exploring the rugged environment.

The sanctuary plays a critical role in conserving Karnataka’s unique biodiversity and protecting threatened species in the region.
