Rinchenpong Monastery
The Rinchenpong Monastery is an 18th-century Buddhist monastery located in the village of Rinchenpong, in West Sikkim, at an altitude of over 1,700 meters (5,500 feet). Founded in 1730 by Ngadakpa Lama, it is the third oldest monastery in Sikkim. The monastery is perched on a mountain trail above the twin villages of Rinchenpong and Kaluk, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, including the majestic Kanchenjunga.
One of the main attractions of the Rinchenpong Monastery is the rare statue of Ati Buddha (Adi-Buddha) in the Yab-Yum position, symbolizing the union of male and female energies. The monastery also serves as a training center for young monks and is surrounded by traditional prayer flags and lush greenery.
Visitors can reach the monastery by following a mountainous trail from the Rinchenpong market, which leads to a series of stone steps. The final climb offers a panoramic view of the valley and the monastery itself.
