Ripon Building
The Ripon Building is the headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation and is an iconic example of neoclassical architecture. Located near the Chennai Central railway station, it was commissioned in 1909 and completed in 1913. The building was designed by G.T.S. Harris and constructed by Loganatha Mudaliar.
The Ripon Building is known for its all-white structure and features a combination of Ionic and Corinthian styles. It has a rectangular shape with a central tower that houses a Westminster Quarter chiming clock. The building also has four bells cast by Gillet and Johnston.
The building is named after Lord Ripon, the Governor-General of British India, who is considered the "Father of Local Self-Government" in India. The foundation stone was laid by Lord Minto, the then Viceroy and Governor-General of India, on December 11, 1909.
