Roop Kund

Roopkund, also known as the Mystery Lake or Skeleton Lake, is a high-altitude glacial lake located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, at an elevation of approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet). The lake is nestled in the lap of the Trishul massif and is surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-capped mountains.

Roopkund is a popular trekking destination, attracting adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers from around the world. The lake is famous for the hundreds of human skeletons found at its edge, which become visible when the snow melts.

These skeletal remains are believed to date back to the 9th century and are thought to be the result of a sudden and violent hailstorm that killed a group of people. Scientific research has shown that the remains belong to three distinct groups who died in two separate events, around 800 CE and 1800 CE.

The Roopkund trek is a challenging yet rewarding journey that takes trekkers through lush meadows, dense forests, and high-altitude passes. The trek offers stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, including Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba.
