São Tomé of Tivim Fort
São Tomé of Tivim Fort, also known as the Tivim Fort or Fortaleza de São Sebastião, is situated in Tivim village in North Goa. Built between 1635 and 1681 by D. Miguel de Noronha during Portuguese rule, the fort was part of a defensive line guarding the Bardez frontier against invasions from the Bahamanis and later the Marathas.
The structure once extended from Tivim to Colvale, featuring a long wall along the Tivim canal, guardhouses, and a moat-like canal. The fort endured several historic attacks, notably by Maratha forces in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, before being abandoned in 1841 as its military importance waned.
Now largely in ruins and barely visible, some sections are under restoration, and the site remains protected as part of Goa’s historical heritage. The remnants reflect a blend of Portuguese and Indian architectural styles, with evidence of Maratha modifications during their brief occupation.
