Sadras
Sadras, located in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu, is a historic fortress town on the Coromandel Coast, about 70 km south of Chennai. Originally known as Sadurangapattinam, it dates back to the 14th century and was a center for weaving superfine muslin cloth for export, as well as pearl and edible oil trading.
The magnificent Sadras Fort, built by the Dutch in the 17th century as a commercial hub, includes a large granary, stables, and facilities for elephants, though much of it is now in ruins. The fort was raided by the British in 1818 and later came under their control.
Sadras also houses a cemetery with beautifully decorated graves from the 17th and 18th centuries and is near the Madras Atomic Power Station and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpakkam. The area blends historical architecture, colonial legacy, and coastal charm with a quiet beach shaded by casuarina trees and dotted with fishing boats.
