Sakkarbaug Zoological Park
Sakkarbaug Zoological Park, also known as Sakkarbaug Zoo or Junagadh Zoo, is one of India's oldest and largest zoological gardens, established in 1863. Located in Junagadh, Gujarat, the zoo spans 84 hectares (210 acres) and plays a crucial role in wildlife conservation, particularly for Asiatic lions, which are bred here for national and international endangered species programs.
The zoo is home to a diverse range of animals, including 525 mammals, 597 birds, and 111 reptiles, housed in 100 enclosures. It also features a natural history museum, which opened in 2003, displaying skeletons of Asiatic lions, panthers, deer, and other wildlife.
In 2009, Sakkarbaug Zoo became the only zoo in India to house African cheetahs, acquired through an exchange program with a Singapore zoo.
