Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Kollam district, Kerala, is a protected area spanning around 172 square kilometers in the southern Western Ghats. It is part of the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve and named after the endemic Chengurinji tree (Gluta travancorica), which is abundant in the region.
The sanctuary boasts diverse tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, with rich biodiversity including mammals like elephants, tigers, leopards, lion-tailed macaques, and Nilgiri langurs. It is also home to over 267 bird species, 42 fish species, 36 reptile species, and 22 amphibian species, many of which are endemic or endangered. The sanctuary features an artificial lake and is known for India's first eco-tourism project centered around Thenmala, offering trekking, boat rides, rock climbing, and camping opportunities.
