Shergarh Fort, located in Malhipur near Rohtas, Bihar, is a historic hill fort perched about 800 feet high on the Kaimur plateau and surrounded by dense forest. It was built between 1540 and 1545 by Emperor Sher Shah Suri and was originally known as Bhurkuda Qila.
The fort is strategically positioned on the banks of the Durgavati River and features massive ramparts, tunnels, underground rooms, a royal pond known as Rani Pokhra, and remnants of structures like the Diwan-e-Khas and guards' halls. The fort was a formidable military stronghold with thick walls designed for defense, and its elevated location made access difficult from below.
It also holds historical significance as it was once controlled by the Kharwar rulers before coming under Sher Shah Suri’s rule. Today, the fort is a notable archaeological site reflecting Indo-Islamic architecture and offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and hills. It stands as a monument to the military and architectural prowess of its time.
