Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Narmada district of Gujarat, is a vast protected area covering approximately 607.7 square kilometers. Originally established in 1982 as Dumkhal Sanctuary for the conservation of sloth bears, it was later expanded and renamed Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary.
The sanctuary is known for its diverse ecosystem, featuring mixed dry deciduous forests, riverine vegetation, and patches of moist teak forests. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including leopards, pangolins, barking deer, and numerous bird species.
The sanctuary derives its name from the historic Shoolpaneshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which once stood on the banks of the Narmada River but was submerged due to the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Reservoir. A new temple has since been built near Rajpipla.
The region is predominantly inhabited by tribal communities, particularly the Vasavas, who rely on forest resources for their livelihood.
