The temple is situated on the Mangalore-Dharmastala Highway, near Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Adyar, Mangalore. It is a significant pilgrimage site, attracting devotees from various parts of Karnataka and beyond.
According to local legend, the temple's history dates back around eight centuries. Maharaja Veerabahu of the Tuluva region accidentally killed a cow with an arrow, intending to target a nearby tiger.
To atone for this unintentional sin, he installed a Shiva Linga, following the advice of the sage Sri Bharadhwaja. The Shiva Linga was consecrated as Sharabeshwara, and the place became known as "Sharavu," with the temple tank called "Sharatheertha".
